What it is
What Is Distorted Face Emoji?
Distorted Face was approved in September 2025 as part of Unicode 17.0 and Emoji 17.0, with platform rollouts expected across late 2025 and throughout 2026.
Visually, it is a smiley face with large bulging eyes looking upward, as though the face is being warped, stretched, or pulled out of shape.
The design reads like a fisheye-lens effect and is often understood as a reaction for shock, amazement, or distress, especially in the exaggerated visual language common in anime and manga.
It can also be read more literally as a face being inflated, compressed, or crushed. Some platform designs add raised eyebrows, while others keep the expression flatter and more alien.
Google's version is derived from an Emoji Kitchen mashup of two 😳 Flushed Face emojis, but it drops the raised eyebrows seen in that mashup. After the iOS 26.4 developer beta, some outlets also compared Distorted Face to the compressed rubber emoji toy in Apple's 2024 iPad Pro "Crush!" era rollout.
Meaning playbook
A reaction face for overload, absurdity, and elastic disbelief.
This emoji works when a message, screenshot, or situation feels stretched past normal surprise and into weird internet-brain territory.
Use it when
- A chat thread goes from normal to cursed in one screenshot.
- Something is stressful and funny at the same time.
- You need a reaction stronger than 😮 but less dramatic than full panic.
Not this
- Not a dizzy or sick face like 😵 or 🥴.
- Not a shy or blushing face like 😳.
- Not plain surprise. It should feel bent, overloaded, and a little unreal.
